Obsessions.

I’m super into home décor.  I can’t really afford to spend a ton of money on designer… well, anything… but I do my best with thrift store finds and whatever I can get my hands on.  I’m a huge DIY person, so if I find something I really like, I usually see if there’s a way to make it on my own.  Right now, working full time an hour away from home, plus coaching high school cheerleading, it’s hard to find the time to do as many projects, but I am trying to start small at least.

After a cleaning/reorganization session this past long weekend, I decided to take a few pictures of the things I love the most when I look around my house.  You can also see a transformation of my living room over the past month, and a few bonus pictures of my adorable HORSE puppy.

This is how our living room started.  Keep in mind that the paint was that color when we moved in.  The color actually isn’t bad, it’s just super dark, goes with nothing, and did I mention super dark?  For an apartment, we do have a decent-sized living room, but the walls made it seem very closed-in.  In the winter, it feels like a cave, and not in a good way.

The reds and greens were for Christmas.  The table was a thrift find by Erik, as was the bamboo side table by me.  I hate the picture above our couch, but we haven’t had time for the DIY project we want to replace it with, yet.

Here it is, with the furniture moved to make room for our Christmas tree.

We replaced the little table that housed our cable box/dvd player/etc. with a piece our landlord had in the basement.  We painted it white, because we are going to paint the rest of the furniture white to match soon.  We painted the walls so we didn't feel suffocated with the red.

Here it is now.  So much bigger, brighter, just better.  There is still a lot we want (read: NEED) to do, but it’s improving.  It’s only taken us seven months.

Maverick likes it too.

Erik’s mom has really cool, eclectic style, and she got us a couple of pieces for Christmas.  You can see both in this picture.

Please don’t mind the ceiling, which needs to be painted over.  We had electrical issues SIX MONTHS ago, and have been waiting for the ok to patch it up.  My boyfriend is in the middle of taking care of what the company didn’t.  The plate that’s mounted on the wall to the left is up in our kitchen, adding color and texture to a very neutral room.  The piece you can see looking very small in the center of the picture is shown larger below.

It’s actually a planter, but the walls in our current apartment are unreliable, which basically means that they are weak and if we fill that thing with dirt and a plant, we will come home from work to find it smashed to pieces on the floor.  For now, we decided it looks fine on its own.  I love elephants, and the fact that they are known to bring good luck in some cultures, which is why she knew it would be perfect for us.

I was having fun taking pictures (albeit with my iPhone, some shot with Instagram), so I kept going and took some of my favorite areas in our house.  I left my kitchen out because we need new curtains badly.  It’s embarrassing.

I obsessed over these for a while, unsure of how they’d actually look, but I’m SO glad I got them.  They are from Urban Outfitters, and you get a set of 25 for $40.  They’re currently sold out, but keep checking back here.  The flowers stick onto little thumbtacks, then stick into the wall, so you can arrange and rearrange however you see fit.  They add so much fun to a boring wall, and are a great alternative to another print or mirror.

Jewelry organization is tough in a small apartment.  We have the master bedroom, which offers two large closets and an en suite bath, but barely fits our bed and a bookcase.  We had to mount our tv, and there is absolutely no room for a dresser/bureau.  For that reason, we are really short on surface and drawer space.  I got the birdcage necklace holder, the small ceramic white owl earring holder and the owl catch-all dish all from Urban Outfitters.

Necklace holder similar here.  Small owl shaped dish similar here.  Owl catchall exact here.

I have regular black nails in the wall right now, holding necklaces that are too long for the birdcage, but I’d like to get something like these glass knobs from Anthropologie.

The wooden bowl is from Target.

I love this moose key holder, also bought at Urban Outfitters.  I can’t find it anymore, but I found something similar here.  The Paris calendar is flat when closed, but once you open to the first month, you can fold the bottom into a flat surface.  My friend Lauren bought it for me for a birthday gift back in October, and I couldn’t wait to use it.  The square shaped catch-all that is housing a speeding ticket in this picture (whoopsies!) was actually the vase from a centerpiece at a wedding.  I can’t remember the trivia question I answered correctly in order to take that home.  It sure beats throwing mail, sunglasses and chapsticks all over the kitchen table or our nightstands.

This area I love, because it offers an array of color in an otherwise pretty neutral room.  While browsing one of our favorite stores in the area, Urban Elements in Salem, MA, we couldn’t walk out without it.  It’s the Bohemian Tapestry mirror, available here.  Buddha came from there also, but I was unable to find him on the website.  The elephant and the turtle on the right are both from Thailand, and the orange vase on the left was thrifted.

Last but not least, I just had to share PART OF my favorite collection, my shoe collection.

If you made it this far in the post, your reward is a couple of pictures of the cutest puppy ever in existence.

He turns one on the first of February!

Ranting and... Raving?

If you were to ask any of my girlfriends about my preferences for "nights out", they would probably each tell you that I hate going to crowded, trendy places in the city, and usually choose not to come out at all.  I really am a homebody, something that has increased over the past few years, and I'm just not into strangers sweating on me.  If I am to go out with my friends, I'd rather do dinner and drinks at a spot we don't usually frequent.  That's not to say I don't make the occasional exception, but that's usually reserved for someone's birthday.  Enter Taylor.

Last night was Taylor's birthday, and though I don't know her very well, LB has been best friends with her since they were thirteen.  Kristin, Courtney and I decided we would accompany LB to the birthday festivities at Phoenix Landing in Cambridge.  Taylor had forewarned me to "wear flats and be prepared for sh*t to get weird", but I kinda just thought it was one of those things girls say when they are anticipating a night of drinking way too much and thinking they should quit their job to be a backup dancer.

Let's just skip the long story and say that when we got there, everything seemed normal, like sort of a dive bar.  There were people sitting around eating on tables throughout the bar, which wasn't very big.  There was a DJ station in the very back, but it was dark and looked completely empty.  We immediately started looking for an upstairs that was a little more lively, but that was it; one floor of complete normalcy... I was ok with that.

We sat down with a couple of drinks, and Taylor showed up with a couple of girlfriends in tow.  The bouncers started moving tables and opening up the bar, and the DJ set up in back.  Taylor whips out a couple of containers of GLOW STICKS, and that's when I knew things were getting weird.  Loud, embarrassing music starts completely assaulting my ears, someone is talking about doing shrooms, and that's when Kristin tells Courtney and I that she purposely didn't pass on Taylor's warning that it was "pretty much a rave", because she knew we wouldn't have come.  I'm not a fan of bad music, people on drugs, or dancing that resembles a seizure*, so NO I WOULDN'T HAVE COME I WOULD BE HOME IN BED RIGHT NOW.

It was easily the weirdest place I think I've ever gone out, but it wasn't that bad... if we stayed at the back talking to just each other.

 Taylor, Kristin, LB, me, Courtney

LB and I... I told you!  A rave!

 Glow sticks.

Kristin literally pulled the car over on the side of the road in Boston on our way home to snap a few pics with this sculpture.  Tell me that climbing that thing doesn't look irresistibly enticing.

And, just for good measure, a couple from our Christmas party last weekend:

Kristin, Jacquie, me, and a pretending-to-be-horrified Courtney.

 Kris and I :-)

Kristin, Christie, LB, Jacquie, me, Courtney, my messy apartment.

Merry Christmas <3

*Note:  I am not making light of seizures, I just have no other way to describe what this looks like.  I was honestly afraid for my life... or at least my drink.

Christmas Wishes

Christmas is almost here! It's hard to believe with the mild weather we've been having in Boston lately. I've barely been wearing a jacket! I can't wait to spend a long weekend with E, the animals, and our closest friends and family eating good food, drinking lots of wine and just relaxing. We are hosting our first Christmas Eve Eve party tomorrow night, complete with a pre-party gift exchange with my girlfriends, and I think my friends may be even more excited than I am! Since I won't get to post tomorrow, I also want to say happy birthday to my beautiful Mama :-) we will have a surprise birthday cake for her at the party.

I can't wait to give everyone my gifts! I think buying people presents and watching their reactions when they open them is the best part of the holiday season, and though I'm definitely more into the giving than the receiving, I'd be lying if I said there weren't a few key things on my wish list.

Nordstrom, $225
Sam Edelman Roza pumps... similar to their open-toed counterpart, these are more appropriate for year-round wear. And if you got your hands on a pair of these, would you want to save them for warm weather?

Apple Store (for iPhone 4), $69.95
Kate Spade Larabee Dot Wristlet. Can you get any more practical? The Michael Kors version is just as cute, but the Apple Store seems to be left with only snakeskin styles. I'd prefer this in a soft gold or taupe color, but the pop of teal would be a fun addition to any outfit.

Nordstrom, $125
Classic tall Hunter wellies. These are so cute, stylish, functional, and if I had them, I'd be a lot more inclined to jump out of bed on rainy days. $125 is a LOT for glorified rubber, so it's hard to justify purchasing these for myself... but if someone else bought them for me, I wouldn't complain.

Etsy, $28
Raven Skull Necklace. How adorable/morbid is this? They have this in several colors/metals, but I find myself always leaning toward gold in any jewelry. The tarnished look only adds to the appeal of this piece. I'd wear it with a blazer, cuffed skinnys, and sky high heels to add edge, or layer it with long, simple strands in a similar gold finish over a plain t-shirt to add some excitement to a bland outfit.

What's on your wish list for Christmas? I could go on and on, but I'm heading home to get ready for the party! Hope everyone has a loooonggg, indulgent, happy holiday weekend :-)
